Spooky Idioms

  • Make one’s blood boil 😡
    Definition: To make someone extremely angry
    Example: The way he dismissed her fears made my blood boil.
  • Frightened to death 💀
    Definition: Extremely frightened
    Example: I was frightened to death when I heard that noise in the dark.
  • Hair-raising 😳
    Definition: Extremely frightening but often thrilling
    Example: That roller coaster was a hair-raising experience.
  • Spill the tea ☕
    Definition: To reveal gossip or secrets
    Example: Come on, spill the tea! What happened at the haunted house?
  • Afraid of one’s own shadow 😨
    Definition: To be easily frightened
    Example: She’s so jumpy, she’s afraid of her own shadow.

  3. What psychological factors do you think are involved in enjoying being scared?
  4. Do you believe there are benefits to experiencing fear in a controlled environment like a theme park or haunted house?
  5. What’s the most terrified you’ve ever been and why?
  6. Do you think fear has an evolutionary purpose?

Round 3: Ready to Role-play?

Duration: Approximately 6 minutes

Roles:

  • Student A: A psychologist researching why people enjoy being scared
  • Student B: A film critic who specialises in horror films

Scenario: Student A and Student B are podcast co-hosts discussing why people enjoy the genre of horror and what it reveals about human psychology. Student A brings in research findings and theories, while Student B offers insights from the film world.
