Talking about Luck, Chance and Success


Welcome to our “Talking About Luck” session in English. In this session, you will practise speaking about luck, chance, and success. You will share personal experiences, discuss beliefs about luck, and explore how luck influences life decisions and outcomes.

Start with some simple, personal questions:

  • Do you think you are generally a lucky or unlucky person? Why?
  • Can you remember a time when something lucky happened to you?
  • Do you believe in “bad luck”, or is everything just coincidence?
  • Are there any small things you do to bring yourself good luck?

Common Expressions:

Good luck!
Meaning: A way to wish someone success
Example: Good luck with your presentation tomorrow—you’ll do great.

Bad luck
Meaning: An unlucky situation
Example: You missed the train? That’s bad luck.

Beginner’s luck
Meaning: When someone succeeds the first time they try something
Example: He won his first poker game—it must be beginner’s luck.

As luck would have it
Meaning: By chance (often surprisingly)
Example: As luck would have it, I met my old friend at the airport.

Down on your luck
Meaning: Experiencing a period of bad luck
Example: He’s been down on his luck since he lost his job.

Push your luck
Meaning: To take a risk expecting luck to continue
Example: You’ve already asked for a favour—don’t push your luck.

Phrasal Verbs

Rely on (luck)
Meaning: To depend on luck instead of effort
Example: You can’t rely on luck—you need to prepare properly.

Count on
Meaning: To expect something to happen
Example: You can’t always count on things going your way.

Run into (something)
Meaning: To experience something unexpectedly
Example: I ran into some good luck and found a job immediately.

Miss out (on something)
Meaning: To lose an opportunity
Example: She missed out on the promotion by just one point.

Come across (something)
Meaning: To find something by chance
Example: I came across an amazing opportunity online.

End up (doing something)
Meaning: To finally be in a situation
Example: We got lost but ended up discovering a beautiful place.
