Are You Ready To Talk about Science, Discoveries and Inventions in English?

Today, we invite you to speak about science and scientific discoveries that – in your opinion – have had the greatest impact on our lives.

To ensure that you have the necessary confidence to tackle any topic related to science, we invite you to participate in the MPEC Conversation Club session. Before we get ready to use a new phrasal verb or an idiomatic phrase, we need a safe context where we can try them out without any risk, right? So, you’re in a perfect place to do just that – we’re glad to provide you with the expressions necessary for an engaging conversation related to the world of scientific discoveries. Let’s begin!

How to get the best out of your

Helloooo! Just a few words of support for those of you who are starting your experience in our Conversation Club and don’t feel very confident. 

Don’t worry, we’re here for you!

On this page, you’ll find the vocabulary that can help you speak with your Club Partners (other MPEC students you’ll be paired with for guided conversations).

If you feel like you need to prepare before the club session, you can review the content of this page in advance. We are your Coaches and we know you well! We know that using Idioms & Phrasal Verbs can be a real challenge, so those are often the language elements we’ll suggest you use 🙃

Idiomatic Expressions Related to Discoveries and Science

  • “Break new ground:” Definition: To make a significant discovery or progress in a field. Example: “The team’s research on renewable energy sources really broke new ground in sustainable technology. 🌱⚡️”
  • “Open new horizons:” Definition: To reveal new possibilities and areas of exploration. Example: “The discovery of exoplanets has opened new horizons in our search for extraterrestrial life. 🌌🪐”
  • “In the dark about:” Definition: To lack knowledge or information about something. Example: “Before the announcement, we were completely in the dark about the groundbreaking findings. 🌑🔬”

Phrasal Verbs You Will Find Useful When Speaking About Inventions

  1. “Bring about:” Definition: To cause something to happen; to lead to a particular outcome. Example: “Their research brought about a breakthrough in clean energy solutions. 🌍⚙️”
  2. “Look into:” Definition: To investigate or examine closely in order to gain understanding. Example: “The scientists are looking into the potential applications of this new material. 🔬🔍”
  3. “Dig up:” Definition: To uncover or discover through research or investigation. Example: “They managed to dig up historical documents that shed light on the origins of the ancient civilization. 📜🔍”
  4. “Find out:” Definition: To discover information through research or investigation. Example: “They found out that the phenomenon was caused by a rare combination of natural factors. 🔬📚”

    • Pondered: Reflected deeply or thoughtfully on a topic.
    • Mysteries: Unexplained phenomena or puzzling occurrences that elicit curiosity.
  2. The world of science is full of surprises. If you could witness any scientific discovery throughout history, which one would you choose? Why?
    • Surprises: Unexpected events or outcomes that defy expectations.
    • Witness: To observe or be present during an event, often firsthand.
  3. Science has led to some mind-boggling breakthroughs. Can you imagine a world without one particular scientific invention or discovery?
    • Mind-boggling: Extremely astonishing or difficult to comprehend.

Round 2: Let’s Explore it!

  1. If you could have a conversation with any scientist, past or present, who would you pick and what question would you ask?
  2. I find it fascinating how discoveries shape our understanding. What’s a lesser-known scientific fact that you find absolutely captivating?
  3. Science fiction often inspires real-world research. Is there a concept from sci-fi that you’d love to see become a reality?
