B1-B2 Airport Vocabulary
- Boarding Pass 🎫: A printed or digital document that allows you to board the flight after check-in.
- Gate 🚪: The specific area at the airport where passengers board their flights.
- Security Check 🛡️: The process of screening passengers and their belongings for prohibited items before boarding.
- Luggage Tag 🏷️: A label attached to your luggage to identify it during the journey.
- Overhead Compartment 🛅: Storage space above your seat on the airplane for cabin luggage.
- Liquid Restrictions 🚱: Rules limiting the amount of liquid you can carry in your hand luggage.
- TSA PreCheck 🏢: A program in the US that allows eligible travelers to go through an expedited security screening process.
- Customs 🛃: The official examination of your belongings when entering a country to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Connecting Flight ➡️✈️: A flight that requires you to change planes at an intermediate airport to reach your final destination.
- Delayed ✈️⏰: When a flight is not on time and leaves later than scheduled.
- Baggage Claim 🛄: The area at the airport where you collect your checked luggage after landing.
- Immigration 🛂: The process of entering a foreign country, where officials check your passport and visa.
- Boarding Time ⏰: The designated time when passengers begin to board the aircraft.
10 idioms and their meanings
- In the same boat 🚣♀️: Facing the same situation or challenge. We’re all in the same boat, dealing with flight delays.
- Jet-setter ✈️👗: A person who travels frequently, especially by air. He’s a jet-setter, always hopping from one country to another.
- Up in the air 🌪️: Uncertain or undecided. The departure time is still up in the air.
- On cloud nine ☁️❤️: Feeling extremely happy and joyful. She was on cloud nine after her successful trip.
- Buckle up 🤝🚀: To get ready for something challenging. Buckle up, it’s going to be a long flight.
- On the horizon 🌅: Something expected or likely to happen soon. New airport security measures are on the horizon.
- First-class 🥇🎟️: Of the highest quality or rank. The airport lounge provides a first-class experience.
- Miles away 🌌🛫: Lost in one’s thoughts or daydreaming. She was miles away, thinking about her upcoming trip.
- Touch down 🛬: To land on the ground. The plane will touch down at 6 PM.
- Keep your feet on the ground 🏔️👣: To stay practical and realistic. Even after winning the lottery, he kept his feet on the ground.
Brace Yourselves for 10 Phrasal Verbs in Context!
- Hold up 🛑: To cause a delay. The traffic jam held us up, and we barely made it to the airport on time!
- Get through 🔄: To successfully complete a task or process. We need to get through security before the flight departs.
- Take off 🛫: To leave the ground and begin a flight. The plane will take off in 15 minutes.

Round 1: Communication and Clarity

- What’s the most unusual or interesting item you’ve seen someone try to take through airport security?
- Are you a meticulous packer, or do you tend to be spontaneous when packing for a trip?
- Do you prefer to arrive at the airport early or cut it close to the departure time?
Round 2: Let’s Explore it!
- How do you pass the time during layovers or flight delays? (a layover = a point where a vehicle stops, with passengers possibly changing vehicles. In public transit, this typically takes a few minutes at a trip terminal.)
- Have you ever missed a flight? How did you handle the situation?
- What’s your strategy for keeping track of important travel documents like passports and boarding passes?
- Do you have any pre-flight rituals or habits that you follow before every trip?
- Share an unforgettable airport or flying experience that left a lasting impression on you.
Round 3:
The Final One, So We Role Play!
In pairs, take turns simulating an airport experience. One of you will be the passenger checking in and going through security, while the other plays the role of a friendly airport staff member. Use the vocabulary, phrasal verbs, and idioms from the handout to make the conversation engaging and authentic. Feel free to improvise and add your unique touch to the role play.
