Emotions are <strong>processes<\/strong>, not objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9e8cf15a1395e1cca9f295a5a11a39c3\"><strong>Primary vs Secondary: Advanced (and Honest) Definitions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a33beb9d89aa954dbc66fc957c6227d9 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Primary<\/strong>: rapid responses, strongly rooted in biology and evolutionary conditioning. They\u2019re \u201cbasic\u201d because they emerge early in development and have relatively universal action schemas (e.g., <em>anger \u2192 boundary protection<\/em>; <em>fear \u2192 avoidance\/activation<\/em>; <em>sadness \u2192 care-seeking<\/em>; <em>joy \u2192 exploration and bonding<\/em>; <em>disgust \u2192 distancing<\/em>; <em>surprise \u2192 orienting<\/em>).<br>Think of them as <strong>raw energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1e7920488a3fef6916ec89d1368f1bae wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Secondary<\/strong>: <strong>constructed<\/strong>, socially shaped emotions (shame, guilt, pride, jealousy, envy, remorse, gratitude, embarrassment). They arise from the interaction between primary emotions, <strong>learned narratives<\/strong> (family, culture, school), attachment history, and social goals.<br>They\u2019re the <strong>energy plus the commentary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Two clarifications to keep us honest<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8dc7b1ef519bdf493258a4fc341ac9a5 wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrimary\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cpure\u201d, and \u201csecondary\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cfake\u201d. From memory and environment, it generates predictions about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What\u2019s going on<\/strong> (meaning)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What the body will need<\/strong> (<em>allostasis<\/em>)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Which action is most efficient<\/strong> (action tendency)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Predictions are <strong>confirmed or corrected<\/strong> by interoceptive signals. If the context resembles a threat pattern, the salience network turns the volume up: noradrenaline for readiness, dopamine for motivation, oxytocin if bonding is required. The subjective result? You <strong>feel<\/strong> a certain way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondary emotions appear when the <strong>mind interprets<\/strong> that primary wave through internal rules: \u201cwe don\u2019t raise our voice\u201d, \u201cif I fail, I\u2019m worthless\u201d, \u201cif I\u2019m angry, I\u2019ll lose love\u201d.
